Yes — with important limits. R-22 is legal for servicing existing equipment that was originally designed for it. However, it is illegal to install R-22 in new HVAC systems under current EPA regulations. Production of new R-22 has been phased out, but existing stock, reclaimed refrigerant, and imported supplies remain legal for maintenance and repair of legacy systems.
Under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, refrigerants sold for appliance servicing can only be purchased by certified technicians. By checking out, you confirm you hold valid EPA Section 608 Type I, II, III, or Universal certification. We reserve the right to request credential verification before shipment.
No on both counts. R-22 cannot be used in new equipment installations. It also cannot be mixed with replacement refrigerants like R-407C, R-421A, or any other blend. Mixing refrigerants creates unpredictable pressures, reduces efficiency, contaminates recovery equipment, and violates EPA regulations. If a system has been contaminated, it must be fully recovered and recharged with virgin refrigerant.
